올해로 장대현학교는 개교 10주년을 맞이합니다. 2014년 3월13일, 13명의 탈북학생을 받아 개교한 이래, 2022년 11월 28일, 8년만에 영호남지역 최초의 학력인정(각종학교) 탈북학교로 인가받아 2023년 3월2일, 장대현중고등학교라는 이름으로 재개교하였습니다.

장대현중고등학교는 탈북학생들의 역량을 강화하여 통일인재로 뿐만 아니라, 세계 속의 한국 인재로 양성할 수 있는 교육시스템을 갖추어 가고 있습니다. 형용할 수 없이 힘든 역경을 거쳐 대한민국에 입국한 탈북민 자녀들의 정서를 다양한 프로그램을 통해 힐링하고, 열악한 가정환경 가운데서 고군분투하는 학생들에게 확고한 미래형 정체성을 확립시켜 줍니다. 나아가 각자 자신의 재능을 발견하고 계발하여, 자신감을 갖고 통일한국의 미래를 헤쳐 나갈 수 있는 글로벌형 인재 양성을 목표로 하고 있습니다.

기숙형 학교의 강점인 공동체생활을 통해 더불어 사는 인성능력과 협동정신을 갖게 하고, 개인별 맞춤형 눈높이 교육을 통해 부족한 기초학력을 탄탄하게 다져줍니다. 중고교 전학년 필수과목인 독일어와 독일문화 수업을 통해 통일독일을 탐구하면서, 선발된 독일어 우수학생들에게는 독일코리아 재단 후원으로 해마다 2~3주간 독일에서 직접 살아보기 체험학습을 갖게 합니다. 3년째 진행하고 있으며 4명의 학생들이 참여했습니다. 동시에, 미국 국무성파견 원어민 교사와 함께하는 영어교육을 통해 살아있는 언어능력을 갖게 합니다. 해마다 자체경쟁을 통해 선발된 학생들에게는 역시 2~3주간 미국 현지 체험학습 기회를 제공하여 폭넓은 문화체험과 현장 영어능력을 갖추게 합니다. 2년째 이어지고 있으며 역시 4명의 학생들이 참여했습니다. 전액 장학금으로 진행하는 이 제도는, 장대현중고등학교에서만 누릴 수 있는 미래형 글로벌교육 프로그램이라고 말할 수 있겠습니다.

장대현에서의 이러한 글로벌 교육 결과는 3명의 본교 졸업생이 대학재학 중 미국대학에 1년 과정 단기 교환유학생으로, 1명의 본교 졸업생이 풀브라이트 장학생으로 선발되어 미국 대학 석사과정으로, 2명의 본교 졸업생은 곧바로 미국대학 입학하는 등의 사례를 통하여 검증되고 있습니다. 지난 8년간 배출된 25명의 졸업생들 중 2명은 직접 취업을 하였고, 23명은 미국과 수도권 명문대학을 포함하여 전국의 4년제 국공립대학과 사립대학 등에 골고루 진학하여 우수한 성적을 나타내 보이고 있습니다.

장대현중고등학교는 학생 1명당 자원봉사 교사 포함 2명 이상의 교직원들이 배당되어 지도하는 우수한 교육환경을 자랑하고 있습니다. 2026년도까지는 기숙사를 증축하여 40명 규모의 정원으로 확장할 계획입니다. 장대현중고등학교는 통일을 넘어 세계로 웅비하는 글로벌형 인재양성을 지향하고 있습니다.

Jangdaehyun School celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The school first opened on March 13, 2014 with 13 North Korean defector students. After eight years, the school finally received its full accreditation on November 28, 2022. The school reopened on March 2, 2023 as Jangdaehyun Middle & High School and it is the first accredited educational institution for North Korean defector students in the Yeonghonam region.

Jangdaehyun Middle & High School aims to educate and to equip students to be the leaders of a unified Korea. The school provides various programs for emotional healing and a solid sense of identity for our students who have gone through unimaginable hardships to come to this country and continue to struggle in difficult family situations. Our mission is to help the students find and develop their talents and become competent global leaders leading reunified Korea.

Dorm life fosters communal living skills and cooperative spirit, while individualized education provides solid academic foundation. Through mandatory German language & culture classes, students learn about German unification, and selected students with outstanding performance go on a 2-3-week German culture trip sponsored by the Korea-Stiftung Foundation. The immersive experience program has been ongoing for three years, with four students participating so far. We also have native English-speaking teachers from Fulbright Foundation, providing natural language learning opportunities. Selected students participate in a 2-3week culture trip program that allows extensive cultural experiences. Three students have participated in the program for the last two years. This fully funded unique program is part of our global education plan.

Our effort for global education has resulted in three graduates studying abroad as exchange students in the US, one graduate being selected as a Fulbright scholar for master’s studies, and two graduates enrolling in American universities. Among the 25 graduates, two have entered the workforce directly, while 23 have been admitted to prestigious universities nationwide, including public and private universities in the capital region and the US, demonstrating wonderful academic achievements.

Jangdaehyun Middle & High School offers excellent educational environment with a 1:2 student-teacher(staff) ratio. Plans are underway to expand the dormitory to accommodate up to 40 students by 2026. Jangdaehyun Middle & High School will continue to endeavor in nurturing global leaders beyond the Korean peninsula.
